Every September 16th, Mexico erupts with music, parades, flags, fireworks, and enough energy to power a city. But let’s not get it twisted — this day isn’t just about the spectacle. It’s about honoring a culture built on grit, love, and unshakable connection.
For me, this day hits differently now. I didn’t grow up with a huge family. I’m Canadian, and my childhood was quieter — fewer people at the table, fewer traditions, fewer loud gatherings that spilled into the street. But then I met my wife. And I married into a real Mexican family.
And from that moment on, everything changed.
💪 A Crash Course in Grit
Día de la Independencia commemorates a fight for freedom that started in 1810. But that spirit of resistance and perseverance? It didn’t stop back then. It’s alive in every Mexican family today — showing up to work, showing up for each other, showing up no matter what.
Let’s be honest: nobody hustles harder than Mexican families. I’ve watched it firsthand. People working multiple jobs without complaint, saving every dollar to give their kids a better life, showing pride in their work — not because they’re chasing status, but because dignity matters.
This isn’t about Instagram-worthy hustle culture. This is about purpose. Sacrifice. Grit. And it’s taught me more than most motivational books ever could.
👨👩👧👦 Family Over Everything
The first time I visited my wife’s extended family in Mexico, I was overwhelmed — in the best possible way. Thirty people outside waving goodbye like we were going off to war. Hug after hug after hug. Kids laughing, aunts joking, uncles teasing, food everywhere. It took an hour to leave the driveway.
I didn’t walk in as an outsider. I was instantly in.
That’s the thing — Mexican families don’t do half-measures. You’re either loved all the way or not at all. And I was all the way in.
It made me realize what I’d been missing. It wasn’t just “family” — it was belonging. It was loyalty. It was ride-or-die support even when things are messy. That kind of connection is rare in today’s world — and it’s something we could all learn from.
🧠 Culture Worth Defending
Let’s address the elephant in the room. In the U.S., there’s a lot of noise right now. Politicians pushing fear. Mass deportations happening. People forgetting the human beings behind the headlines.
So yeah — now’s the perfect time to celebrate Mexico. To honor the culture. The work ethic. The joy. The love. The contribution.
Because Mexican culture doesn’t just bring amazing tacos and fireworks. It brings values this world desperately needs: hard work without ego, deep family roots, and a love of life that’s loud, proud, and fully alive.

No matter where you’re from, here’s what we can all take from Mexican culture:
- Show up for your people. Don’t just say you love them — prove it, daily.
- Take pride in where you come from. Even if it’s messy. Even if it’s misunderstood.
- Live louder. Celebrate holidays. Take up space. Make time for the people who matter.

Marrying into a Mexican family taught me how to show up better. It taught me how to lead with love, hold space for chaos, and build a life around people — not just profit.
