The forgotten meaning of Labor Day — and what “work” looks like in 2025
Let’s be real. Most people don’t actually know why Labor Day exists.
We just know it’s a long weekend, there’s probably a BBQ involved, and for some reason we’re not supposed to wear white after it.
But Labor Day didn’t start as a chill celebration. It started as a fight.
🛠️ Labor Day: The Quick History
Back in the late 1800s, during the rise of the Industrial Revolution, American workers were getting chewed up and spit out by the system.
- 12+ hour shifts
- 6–7 days a week
- Unsafe conditions
- Child labor
People were dying on the job while lining the pockets of factory owners who wouldn’t even blink. So workers banded together. They organized, marched, striked, and demanded better.
The labor movement was born. And eventually, Labor Day became a national holiday to recognize “the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
Sounds noble, right?
But ask yourself this:
❓What Does “Labor” Mean in 2025?
Because these days…
- You can work 8 hours a day and still not pay your bills
- You can do everything “right” and still feel financially stuck
- You can have two jobs and zero freedom
